2023 Domaine de Trévallon Alpilles Trévallon Rouge 1.5L

Domaine de Trevallon, planted by Eloi Durrbach starting in 1973 in the Alpilles hills, makes a red blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah on chalky soil, inspired by 19th-century texts suggesting Cabernet had grown in the area before phylloxera. The estate’s insistence on this blend led it to leave the AOC Baux-de-Provence in 1996; the wine is now bottled as Vin de France.

Farmed organically with whole-cluster vinification and aged 24 months in foudres with minimal sulfur, the wine shows deep carmine color, ripe red and black fruit, white pepper and licorice spice, with a long, refined, tannic finish. Bottled in magnum, it is one of Provence’s most collectible and philosophically distinctive reds.
