Description

2020 Prieuré Roch Clos des Varoilles: Monopole Gevrey Premier Cru Magnum

The 2020 Domaine Prieuré Roch Clos des Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Rouge 1.5L Magnum is an exceedingly scarce natural wine of monumental depth. In particular, Clos des Varoilles is a historic 6-hectare amphitheater monopole with ancient vines dating back to the 12th century. In addition, the solar and concentrated 2020 vintage yielded thrilling fruit purity, vibrant natural acidity, and electric structural energy in large format.

Tasting Notes for 2020 Prieuré Roch Clos des Varoilles

The wine opens with captivating aromas of wild raspberry, tart red cherry, blood orange zest, and crushed limestone. Furthermore, delicate hints of rose petals, wood smoke, and forest floor develop gracefully with aeration. On the palate, fine-grained, chalky tannins support a vibrant and airy core of fresh red berries. Consequently, the finish lingers with intense saline tension, mouthwatering acidity, and Premier Cru poise.

Estate History and Heritage

Domaine Prieuré Roch was founded in 1988 by the late Henry-Frédéric Roch, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Specifically, Henry-Frédéric pioneered strict organic viticulture, whole-cluster fermentation without added sulfur, and ancient wooden vats. Moreover, the acquisition of the historic Clos des Varoilles monopole expanded the estate’s legendary Gevrey portfolio.

Today, Prieuré Roch bottlings command worldwide cult worship, fiercely pursued by top sommeliers and collectors. As a result, this 2020 magnum stands as a monumental acquisition of natural Burgundian craft.
