The Macallan Edition No. 5 750ml is the fifth release in The Macallan’s acclaimed Edition Series. Introduced in 2019, this limited-edition Highland single malt Scotch whisky celebrates the remarkable range of natural colors created during oak-cask maturation.

Edition No. 5 was developed in partnership with the Pantone Color Institute. The collaboration produced the distinctive purple shade seen across the bottle and presentation box—a color chosen to represent the complexity, precision and craftsmanship behind The Macallan’s whisky-making process.

Bottled at 48.5% ABV, this no-age-statement expression was created exclusively from American oak casks. Its flavor profile brings together vanilla, caramel, orchard fruit and warming oak spice, resulting in a rich yet balanced Macallan made for both thoughtful tasting and serious collecting.

A Celebration of Natural Color

The Macallan Edition No. 5 was created as a tribute to the natural color found throughout The Macallan’s whiskies. Its sunlight-barley appearance comes entirely from the oak casks used during maturation, without added coloring.

Whisky maker Sarah Burgess selected a palette of first-fill and refill American oak casks—including bourbon barrels, hogsheads and butts—to create the final expression. Each cask contributed its own balance of color, sweetness, fruit and oak spice.

The Pantone Color Institute then created a unique and vibrant purple for the packaging. The combination of red and blue was chosen to symbolize the many individual elements that come together during the whisky-making process.

The Macallan Edition No. 5 Tasting Notes

Aroma

Vanilla and buttery toffee lead the nose, followed by polished oak, nutmeg and fresh ginger. Pear and an aromatic touch of lemon basil bring brightness and balance.

Palate

Fresh caramel sweetness develops into poached peach and ripe pear. Toffee follows across the mid-palate, accompanied by light oak, nutmeg and a gentle warmth of ginger.

Finish

Long and sweet, with lingering toffee, orchard fruit and softly warming oak spice.
