Kujira 20 Year Old Ryukyu Whisky Description
Kujira 20 Year Old Ryukyu Whisky 700ml is a rare aged single grain whisky produced by Kumesen Syuzo in Okinawa, Japan. Made entirely from Japanese Indica rice and Okinawa black koji, this distinctive whisky combines traditional Ryukyu distilling methods with two decades of maturation in Bourbon casks.
Kumesen Syuzo was founded in Okinawa in 1952 with a focus on traditional rice-based spirits. In 1989, the distillery began aging its rice spirit in oak barrels, eventually giving rise to the distinctive style now known as Kujira Ryukyu Whisky.
The Kujira 20 Year Old spends approximately two decades maturing in selected Bourbon casks. Okinawa’s subtropical climate encourages interaction between the spirit and oak, helping develop layers of vanilla, dried fruit, spice, herbs, plum, and mature wood.
Bottled at 43% ABV / 86 proof in a 700ml format, this expression is also non-chill filtered and bottled without added caramel coloring, preserving its natural character and mature rice-whisky profile.

20 Years in Bourbon Casks
Kujira 20 Year Old gains much of its complexity from extended maturation in Bourbon casks. Over two decades, the rice-based spirit develops deeper vanilla, caramelized sweetness, dried fruit, spice, and oak character.
The long maturation is especially significant for Ryukyu whisky because traditional Okinawan rice spirits are not usually aged for periods of this length. As a result, Kujira 20 Year Old offers a profile that combines traditional Okinawan distilling heritage with the structure and maturity associated with long-aged grain whisky.
Made from Japanese Indica Rice and Black Koji
Unlike conventional malt whisky, Kujira 20 Year Old begins with 100% Japanese Indica rice. The rice is fermented using black koji, a key element of Okinawa’s traditional distilling culture.
This distinctive production method gives the whisky a different foundation from barley- or corn-based spirits. The result combines rice-derived softness and sweetness with the vanilla, wood, spice, and dried-fruit character created through extended Bourbon-cask aging.
Okinawa and Ryukyu Whisky Heritage
Kujira comes from Okinawa, historically associated with the former Ryukyu Kingdom. The region has a long tradition of producing rice-based distilled spirits, and Kujira builds on that heritage while introducing extended oak maturation.
Kumesen Syuzo began aging its spirits in Bourbon casks in 1989. The resulting older stocks became the foundation for long-aged releases such as Kujira 20 Year Old.
Why Collectors Want Kujira 20 Year Old
Kujira 20 Year Old Ryukyu Whisky has strong collector appeal because of its unusual raw material, long age statement, Okinawan origin, and limited availability.
Few aged whiskies combine 100% Indica rice, black koji, 20 years of Bourbon-cask maturation, and Okinawan production in a single expression. That gives Kujira a distinctive position among collectible Japanese spirits.
This bottle is especially attractive for buyers searching for Kujira whisky, Okinawa whisky, rare Japanese whisky, rice whisky, 20 year old whisky, Bourbon cask Japanese whisky, and collectible Ryukyu spirits.
Serving Recommendation
Serve Kujira 20 Year Old neat in a Glencairn or tulip-shaped whisky glass. Allow the whisky to rest for several minutes so the plum, herbs, vanilla, licorice, dried fruit, spice, and oak aromas can fully develop.
A few drops of water may soften the oak and reveal additional fruit and sweetness. A large clear ice cube can also be used for a slower, cooler tasting experience.
Food Pairing
Pair with dark chocolate, dried fruit, roasted nuts, caramel desserts, aged cheese, grilled meats, smoked dishes, or Japanese-inspired cuisine.
Buyer Note
Because this is a mature collectible whisky, buyers should review bottle condition, label condition, stopper condition, seal integrity, fill level, packaging condition, and overall presentation before purchase.
