Description

The 2008 F.E. Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile stands as an immortal benchmark of Alsace viticulture. Furthermore, it originates from one of the greatest cool-climate vintages of the modern era. Frédéric Emile Trimbach established the house’s international fame at the 1898 Brussels World’s Fair. Today, this iconic cuvée honors his legacy with dry, uncompromising perfection.

Additionally, the wine displays laser-like precision and intense verticality. Trimbach held back the release of the 2008 until after the 2009 vintage. Consequently, this monumental acid structure had ample time to mature in bottle before commercial release.

Terroir & Viticulture

Trimbach historically labels this bottling as Alsace AOC due to family philosophy. However, the cuvée comes entirely from 100% Grand Cru fruit. The blend draws from old vines averaging over 45 years of age. These vines sit across two prized slopes overlooking Ribeauvillé: Geisberg and Osterberg.

Specifically, Geisberg provides fossil-rich limestone and sandstone that delivers power and dry extract. Meanwhile, Osterberg contributes high-toned acidity, floral lift, and mineral tension. The 2008 growing season enjoyed a cool summer and a dry, sunny autumn. Therefore, the grapes hung late into October to achieve full phenolic maturity.

Vinification & Craftsmanship

Winemaker Pierre Trimbach fundamentally rejects residual sweetness, heavy oak, and soft textures. Instead, he practices an uncompromising, purist winemaking style. The team hand-harvests every cluster before gentle pneumatic pressing. Afterwards, the juice undergoes cold gravity-settling in stainless steel vats.

Fermentation occurs under strict temperature control with neutral yeasts. In addition, malolactic fermentation is completely blocked. This critical step preserves the natural crystalline freshness of the vintage. Furthermore, the wine aged in bottle for over six years prior to commercial release.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the wine pours a brilliant pale straw-gold with vivid green reflections. The nose immediately reveals lime zest, green apple, and white orchard peach. In addition, complex nuances of struck flint, petrol (TDN), dried chamomile, and crushed oyster shells emerge with air.

On the palate, the wine displays extraordinary dry extract and weightless velocity. A vibrant spine of 2008 acidity drives cleanly through the core. Meanwhile, smoky gunflint and saline limestone minerality coat the mid-palate. Consequently, the bone-dry finish vibrates with mouthwatering tension for minutes.

Service & Cellar Potential

Serve this wine between 10°C–12°C (50°F–54°F) in universal white wine or Riesling stemware. Specifically, we recommend pulling the cork 30 to 45 minutes prior to service. This brief aeration allows the reductive, flinty aromatics to blossom into ripe citrus oils.

Pair this bottle with roasted turbot, pike quenelles, pork belly, or traditional Alsatian choucroute. Furthermore, aged Comté cheese makes a sensational match. As a result, collectors can enjoy it today or cellar it effortlessly through 2040+.
