2003 Château Montrose: Monumental Saint-Estèphe Power
The 2003 Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe 750ml stands as an immortal, 100-point triumph over the extreme summer heatwave of 2003. In particular, Montrose’s deep gravel soils over moisture-retentive clay terraces bordering the Gironde estuary shielded the old vines from drought stress. In addition, this historic vintage produced a wine of monumental density, lavish black fruit, and astonishing freshness.
Tasting Notes for 2003 Château Montrose
The wine opens with an explosive, hypnotic bouquet of crème de cassis, blackberry liqueur, smoked meat, and black truffle. Furthermore, decadent layers of Havana cigar wrapper, licorice, dark chocolate, and graphite unfurl with incredible power. On the palate, a massive, unctuous core of black fruit floods the mouth, buttressed by towering yet completely seamless tannins. Consequently, the finish echoes for over a minute with profound savory persistence, sweet fruit purity, and sovereign poise.

Estate History and Heritage
Château Montrose was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, earning the moniker “The Latour of Saint-Estèphe” for its sheer structural longevity. Specifically, the Charmolüe family directed the estate during the 2003 harvest, executing heroic viticultural work to protect the fruit. Moreover, Montrose’s microclimate along the wide estuary provides natural thermal regulation found nowhere else in the Médoc.
Today, the 2003 Montrose is universally celebrated as one of the single greatest wines produced anywhere in Bordeaux in the twenty-first century. As a result, this bottle represents a cornerstone acquisition for elite collectors.
