Description

Overview & Provenance

The 2001 Château Montrose is a classic Left Bank Bordeaux from the heart of Saint-Estèphe. Known by collectors as the “Latour of Saint-Estèphe,” Montrose sits on deep gravel mounds facing the Gironde estuary. As a result, its wines showcase powerful structure and slow-evolving complexity.

The 2001 vintage is an under-the-radar Left Bank classic prized for balance and freshness. In addition, two decades of aging have softened its muscular frame. Therefore, this bottle is now entering its prime drinking window with refined gravelly elegance.

Tasting Profile & Sensory Character

  • Aromatics: First, the nose offers dried cassis, dark plum, and tobacco leaf. Soon after, complex aromas of cedarwood, graphite, iron ore, and forest floor unfold.
  • Palate: In addition, the palate shows silky, resolved tannins and fresh acidity. Mature red and black fruit notes mingle with espresso bean, lead pencil, and earthy spice on a long, noble finish.

Service & Culinary Pairings

Serving Suggestions: First, decant gently off any natural cellar sediment 45 minutes before serving. Next, pour at 62°F–65°F (17°C–18°C) in wide Bordeaux stems.

Recommended Pairings: Because of its earthy tertiary notes and firm core, this mature Bordeaux matches well with red meat:

  • Roast rack of lamb with garlic and thyme
  • Filet mignon with truffle and red wine reduction
  • Pan-roasted duck breast with chanterelles
  • Braised beef short ribs

Collector Notes & Cellar Potential

The 2001 Château Montrose is drinking beautifully today. Thanks to Saint-Estèphe’s solid structural frame, this bottle will remain vibrant and hold strong through 2036.
