Description

The 1995 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is a commanding benchmark of Left Bank power and structure. Furthermore, the 1995 vintage marked the beginning of an exceptional era for Pauillac. The estate achieved breathtaking density and classical Médoc architecture. Consequently, this mature release offers collectors an aristocratic tasting experience at peak maturity.

Additionally, Pichon Baron stands as one of the quintessential “Super Seconds” of Bordeaux. The property consistently produces wines of formidable power and longevity. Therefore, this pristine 1995 bottling delivers quintessential Pauillac character with fully integrated tannins.

Terroir & Viticulture

Château Pichon Baron occupies prime gravel mounds near the border of Saint-Julien. Specifically, the historic parcels sit directly opposite Château Latour. The soil features deep Günzian gravel over dense clay subsoils. As a result, the vines benefit from exceptional natural drainage and deep root structures.

Meanwhile, the 1995 growing season enjoyed hot, dry summer weather. Cool rains in September refreshed the canopy without disrupting ripening. Furthermore, technical director Jean-René Matignon enforced rigorous canopy management. Thus, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes achieved optimal phenolic maturity and thick skins.

Vinification & Craftsmanship

In the cuverie, Pichon Baron utilized modern precision alongside classical traditions. First, the estate sorted the hand-harvested fruit rigorously parcel by parcel. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve pure cassis fruit.

Subsequently, the wine matured for roughly 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques. The estate utilized approximately 80% new oak to structure the powerful vintage fruit. In addition, the wine was racked barrel to barrel with traditional egg white fining. Decades of patient bottle aging have now resolved its muscular framework into pure velvet.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the wine shows a dense garnet core with a mature ruby-brick rim. Immediately, the nose opens with aromas of crème de cassis, cedarwood, and graphite. In addition, savory notes of vintage cigar box, leather, and espresso bean unfold with air.

On the palate, the wine delivers immense depth, full body, and seamless texture. Melted yet muscular tannins frame a deep core of black fruit and mineral earth. Meanwhile, a vibrant spine of Pauillac acidity provides energetic lift. Consequently, the finish persists for over a minute with lingering notes of dark chocolate and tobacco.

Service & Cellar Potential

Serve this wine between 16°C–18°C (60°F–64°F) in large Bordeaux stemware. Additionally, we recommend decanting the bottle for 30 to 45 minutes prior to service. This gentle aeration helps awaken its dense tertiary bouquet.

Pair this Pauillac with prime dry-aged ribeye, roasted venison, or rack of lamb. Furthermore, this 1995 vintage is drinking in its prime mature window today. As a result, collectors can enjoy it now or cellar it safely through 2035.
