Description

The 1994 Château Tertre Rôteboeuf is a captivating, heroic expression of artisanal Right Bank winemaking. Furthermore, François Mitjavile has long been recognized as one of Bordeaux’s greatest individualists. The 1994 vintage tested growers across the region with autumn rain. However, Mitjavile produced a breathtaking wine of astonishing warmth and depth.

Additionally, Tertre Rôteboeuf occupies true cult status among fine wine collectors worldwide. Mitjavile’s uncompromising methods consistently outperform difficult vintage conditions. Therefore, this mature 1994 allocation offers an extraordinary glimpse into pure winemaking artistry.

Terroir & Viticulture

The estate sits within a steep natural amphitheater on the southern slopes of Saint-Émilion. Specifically, this south-facing bowl captures radiant solar warmth while shielding vines from northern winds. The soil consists of chalky clay over a fractured limestone base. As a result, the soils drain excess moisture quickly during rainy periods.

Meanwhile, François Mitjavile waited patiently past the September rains before harvesting. He severely pruned the vines and accepted tiny natural yields. Furthermore, deep-rooted old vines extracted essential mineral concentration from the limestone subsoil. Consequently, the remaining Merlot and Cabernet Franc clusters achieved complete phenolic ripeness.

Vinification & Craftsmanship

In the cellar, François Mitjavile followed his signature artisan winemaking philosophy. First, the hand-harvested grapes were sorted with extreme severity. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled concrete vats using indigenous yeasts.

Subsequently, the wine matured for roughly 18 to 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels from Radoux. Mitjavile’s warm cellar aging softened the structural frame of the vintage. Moreover, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration. Today, decades in bottle have melted every component into decadent harmony.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the wine presents an attractive mahogany-garnet hue with amber reflections. Immediately, the nose bursts with rich aromas of dried black cherry, kirsch, and dark chocolate. In addition, complex notes of roasted coffee beans, cigar tobacco, black truffle, and exotic spice emerge with air.

On the palate, the wine feels plush, velvety, and remarkably generous. Melted tannins support rich flavors of stewed plum and mocha. Meanwhile, a delicate vein of limestone acidity maintains freshness and lift. Consequently, the finish persists with lingering notes of smoky oak, sweet spices, and savory earth.

Service & Cellar Potential

Serve this mature Right Bank wine between 16°C–18°C (60°F–64°F) in large Bordeaux stemware. Specifically, avoid aggressive decanting due to its delicate tertiary maturity. Pull the cork 20 to 30 minutes before serving instead. Therefore, the multifaceted, mature aromatics will blossom gently in the glass.

Pair this wine with roasted duck, venison with cherry reduction, or aged cheeses. Furthermore, this 1994 vintage has reached its absolute tertiary peak today. As a result, collectors should celebrate this rare bottle over the near term.
