1986 Château Gruaud Larose: Monumental Saint-Julien Historic Icon
The 1986 Château Gruaud Larose Saint-Julien Rouge 750ml is an iconic collector treasure from a legendary vintage of Left Bank Bordeaux. In particular, this famed second-growth estate sits on deep Günzian gravel plateaus that yield Cabernet of formidable density. In addition, the 1986 harvest produced Cabernets of monumental tannin, remarkable structural cut, and historic ageworthiness.
Tasting Notes for 1986 Château Gruaud Larose
The wine opens with commanding tertiary aromas of dried blackcurrant, leather, cigar box, cedarwood, and sous-bois. Furthermore, complex hints of smoked meats, dark chocolate, and graphite unfold with patient decanting. On the palate, muscular yet resolved tannins cushion a deeply savory core of mature dark fruit. Consequently, the finish lingers with extraordinary length, earthy minerality, and noble Bordeaux poise.

Estate History and Heritage
Château Gruaud Larose was founded in 1725 by knight Joseph Stanislas Gruaud, uniting several prime Saint-Julien parcels. Specifically, the estate earned second-growth status in the landmark 1855 classification, adopting its famous motto: “Le Roi des Vins, Le Vin des Rois.” Moreover, the Cordier family managed the estate through the 20th century, cementing its reputation for muscular longevity.
Today, the Merlaut family directs the property with certified organic farming. As a result, this 1986 vintage stands as an enduring monument of classic Médoc nobility.
