Description

1996 Domaine de la Grange des Pères Rouge: Cult Southern French Royalty

The 1996 Domaine de la Grange des Pères Hérault Rouge 750ml stands as an immortal, mythical monument of Southern French viticulture from an acclaimed, classic vintage. In particular, the late Laurent Vaillé blended Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Counoise from high-altitude limestone scree in Aniane. In addition, the cool, balanced 1996 harvest produced wines of razor-sharp aromatic definition, energetic acidity, and transparent terroir expressiveness.

Tasting Notes for 1996 Domaine de la Grange des Pères Rouge

The wine opens with a profound, hypnotic bouquet of blackberry liqueur, black olive tapenade, smoked bacon fat, and crushed limestone. Furthermore, complex layers of garrigue herbs, leather, truffled earth, wild rosemary, and black pepper blossom with incredible intensity. On the palate, a velvety, full-bodied core of dark fruit is framed by mature, fine-grained tannins and vibrant stony tension. Consequently, the finish persists for well over a minute with savory purity, earthen authority, and majestic poise.

Estate History and Heritage

Laurent Vaillé founded Domaine de la Grange des Pères in 1992 after studying under legendary vignerons Jean-François Coche-Dury, Gérard Chave, and Éloi Dürrbach. Specifically, Vaillé cleared steep, rocky limestone hillsides with dynamite to plant pristine cuttings sourced directly from Chave and Trevallon. Moreover, his non-interventionist winemaking created wines that rival the finest Hermitage and Grand Cru Burgundy.

Today, following Laurent Vaillé’s tragic passing in 2021, early vintages of Grange des Pères like the 1996 are finite, holy-grail collectibles. As a result, this bottle offers an emotionally powerful, benchmark tasting experience.
