Description

2012 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeux: Legendary Loire Cabernet Franc in Magnum

The 2012 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeux Saumur-Champigny 1.5L Magnum stands as an immortal, mythical benchmark of world-class Cabernet Franc. In particular, Les Poyeux is an exceptional 2.9-hectare parcel on deep, wind-blown sand over porous Turonian limestone bedrock in Chacé. In addition, the classic, long-lived 2012 vintage produced wines of razor-sharp aromatic definition, energetic acidity, and transparent terroir expressiveness.

Tasting Notes for 2012 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeux

The wine opens with an intoxicating bouquet of wild raspberry, dark cherry, dried rose petals, and spicy undergrowth. Furthermore, nuanced notes of cinnamon bark, blood orange, dark chocolate, and crushed limestone emerge gracefully with air. On the palate, an exceptionally silky texture carries a concentrated core of pure red fruit, supported by fine, seamless tannins. Consequently, the finish lingers with mouthwatering tension, perfumed lift, and immense persistence.

Estate History and Heritage

Clos Rougeard was elevated to legendary cult status under the visionary stewardship of the late brothers Charly and Nady Foucault. Specifically, the Foucault family practiced strict organic farming, non-interventionist cellar practices, and two years of barrel aging in underground limestone cellars. Moreover, their wines prove that Cabernet Franc can effortlessly rival the greatest Grand Cru Burgundies and First Growth Bordeaux.

Today, mature magnums from the Foucault era are nearly impossible to acquire on the open market. As a result, this 2012 Les Poyeux represents an apex prize for serious fine wine connoisseurs.
