1993 Domaine René Engel Clos de Vougeot: Cult Burgundy Heritage
The 1993 Domaine René Engel Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 750ml represents a revered cult artifact from one of the most lamented lost estates of the Côte de Nuits. In particular, the late Philippe Engel crafted benchmark Pinot Noir marked by profound purity, unforced extraction, and structural elegance. In addition, the great 1993 vintage provided firm structural spine, deep phenolic concentration, and decades of cellaring power.
Tasting Notes for 1993 Domaine René Engel Clos de Vougeot
The wine opens with an evocative bouquet of black cherry, dark plum, spiced underbrush, and crushed violets. Furthermore, tertiary notes of leather, truffled earth, licorice, and smoked tea leaves unfold with aeration. On the palate, a muscular, focused entry reveals rich dark-fruit concentration framed by mature, fine-grained tannins and energetic mineral acidity. Consequently, the finish lingers with profound savory persistence, earthen warmth, and rustic Grand Cru nobility.

Estate History and Heritage
Domaine René Engel was founded in the early twentieth century by René Engel, a legendary figure who helped establish the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. Specifically, his grandson Philippe Engel cemented the estate’s legendary cult status through the 1990s with his soulful, pure Burgundies. Moreover, following Philippe’s tragic early passing in 2005, the estate was sold to become Domaine d’Eugénie, rendering Engel bottles finite relics of history.
Today, original René Engel Grand Cru bottlings are pursued obsessively by top Burgundy connoisseurs around the globe. As a result, this 1993 Clos de Vougeot stands as an extraordinary, irreplaceable collector’s prize.
