1964 Pierre Engel Clos de Vougeot: Historic Monastic Grand Cru Artifact
The 1964 Pierre Engel Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Rouge 750ml is a mythic, museum-grade collector artifact from a legendary harvest. In particular, the ancient walled Clos de Vougeot encompasses prime limestone-clay soils historically cultivated by Cistercian monks. In addition, over six decades of careful cellar aging have transformed this Pinot Noir into a study of mature tertiary complexity.
Tasting Notes for 1964 Pierre Engel Clos de Vougeot
The wine opens with mature, complex aromas of dried cherry, leather, sous-bois, dried rose petals, and black truffle. Furthermore, nuanced notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, and warm baking spices evolve with aeration. On the palate, muscular yet resolved tannins support a broad, savory core of mature dark berries. Consequently, the finish lingers with noble Grand Cru poise, earthy minerality, and enduring persistence.

Estate History and Heritage
Domaine René Engel was founded in Vosne-Romanée in 1919 by René Engel, who helped establish the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. Specifically, Pierre Engel managed the estate during the 1960s, preserving ancient massale-selection vines and traditional wood fermentations. Moreover, the domaine’s historic cellars produced some of the most celebrated wines of the 20th century before becoming Domaine d’Eugénie.
Today, well-preserved bottles from 1964 are prized by collectors as irreplaceable vinous artifacts. As a result, this Clos de Vougeot offers an authentic and noble taste of historic Burgundy royalty.
