Description

2011 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant: Monopole Savennières Magnum

The 2011 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant Savennières Blanc 1.5L Magnum represents an ancient, mythic white wine of singular complexity. In particular, this legendary 7-hectare monopole sits on steep south-facing schist slopes overlooking the Loire River. In addition, the disciplined 2011 harvest produced fruit of immense mineral tension, which has developed sublime tertiary depth in the magnum format.

Tasting Notes for 2011 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant

The wine opens with hypnotic aromas of candied citrus peel, quince, beeswax, chamomile, and crushed schist. Furthermore, complex tertiary notes of ginger, dried apricot, honeyed nuts, and wet river stones unfold with aeration. On the palate, an expansive, phenolic texture is pierced by a laser-like spine of mineral acidity. Consequently, the finish lingers with extraordinary length, saline grip, and noble, dry extract.

Estate History and Heritage

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant was planted by Cistercian monks in 1130, maintaining continuous vine cultivation for nearly nine centuries. Specifically, proprietor Nicolas Joly became the global intellectual leader of biodynamic viticulture, converting the entire estate in the early 1980s. Moreover, the property is recognized as its own distinct appellation d’origine contrôlée.

Today, Virginie Joly continues this uncompromising biodynamic legacy alongside her father. As a result, this 2011 magnum stands as a monument to ancient terroir and biodynamic truth.
