The 2004 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle is an iconic benchmark of Northern Rhône Syrah. Furthermore, La Chapelle stands among the most historic and legendary wine labels in the world. The 2004 vintage produced a classically styled, aromatic, and chiseled profile. Consequently, this mature bottle offers collectors profound savory depth and mineral tension.
Additionally, the cuvée takes its name from the historic Saint-Christophe chapel atop the Hermitage hill. Jaboulet selects fruit exclusively from the hill’s most prestigious parcels. Therefore, this mature 2004 release delivers authentic terroir expression alongside exquisite tertiary elegance.
Terroir & Viticulture
The Hermitage hill features some of the steepest, most complex granite terroirs in France. Specifically, La Chapelle blends fruit from legendary micro-terroirs including Les Bessards, Le Méal, and Les Rocoules. Les Bessards provides hard, fractured granite that delivers power and structure. Meanwhile, Le Méal contributes warmer limestone gravel that imparts supple richness.
The 2004 growing season was characterized by classic cool-climate conditions throughout the summer. However, a warm and sunny September allowed the grapes to achieve optimal physiological ripeness. Furthermore, old bush vines dug deep into the rock to preserve natural acidity. Thus, the harvested Syrah retained brilliant aromatic freshness and structural balance.
Vinification & Craftsmanship
In the cellar, Jaboulet crafted this vintage with classical Northern Rhône traditions. First, vineyard teams hand-harvested the old-vine Syrah parcels at low yields. In addition, grapes underwent meticulous sorting before partial destemming.
Subsequently, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled vats with indigenous yeasts. The wine then matured for roughly 15 to 18 months in classic French oak barriques. However, the estate carefully limited new wood to safeguard the delicate mineral footprint. Finally, the wine was bottled with minimal handling to ensure tremendous cellar longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet core with a mature ruby-brick rim. Immediately, the nose opens with aromas of blackberry, smoked bacon fat, and cracked black pepper. In addition, savory nuances of black olive tapenade, leather, and dried violets emerge with aeration.
On the palate, the wine feels remarkably harmonious, savory, and energetic. Fine, resolved tannins support flavors of cassis, smoked game, and graphite. Meanwhile, an incisive spine of cool granite acidity drives the wine forward. Consequently, the finish persists for well over a minute with lingering notes of crushed stone and dried herbs.

Service & Cellar Potential
Serve this mature Hermitage between 16°C–18°C (60°F–64°F) in large Syrah stemware. Additionally, we advise pulling the cork 30 to 45 minutes prior to service. This gentle aeration allows the complex gamey and peppery aromatics to awaken seamlessly.
Pair this wine with roasted leg of lamb, grilled venison, or braised duck with wild mushrooms. Furthermore, this 2004 vintage is drinking at its peak secondary plateau today. As a result, collectors can enjoy it now or cellar it safely through 2034.
